PHENOLIC ACIDS – ANTIGENOTOXIC COMPOUNDS FROM MEDICINAL AND EDIBLE PLANTS

Abstract

Phenolic acids are the group of phytochemicals frequently found in many medicinal and edible plants. Their high prevalence and safety make them the promising group of biologically active compounds.

Phenolic acids have high medicinal potential. There are many reports in the literature about their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial or anticancer activity. Moreover, phenolic acids have the potential as antigenotoxic and antimutagenic agents. The antigenotoxic activity against various mutagens was observed in many studies based on bacterial, in vivo, and in vitro methods.

Many authors have tried to find the mechanism of antimutagenic action of phenolic acids. The most commonly described mechanism is related to their high antioxidant activity, nonetheless, many different action mechanisms were proposed. The enormous advantage of phenolic acids is that they act through multiple mechanisms, and search for other possible mechanisms of action is the interesting direction of the future research.
