Not only foils and packaging. Part 1: About the applications of polymers in ophthalmology, dentistry and medical equipment

Joanna Warguła

Abstract

Polymers are a heterogeneous chemical group, because in their structures a divergent chemical groups, e.g. aromatic systems (e.g. polystyrene), halogen substituents (e.g. polyvinyl chloride), ester bonds (e.g. dacron) or amide bonds (e.g. polycaprolactam) can be found. This chemical diversity translates into a wide spectrum of physicochemical properties (e.g. water absorption capacity, hardness, plasticity), and thus into the applicability of polymers, including in medical and pharmaceutical sciences. This report presents examples of polymers used in ophthalmology, dentistry and broadly understood medical equipment. Particular emphasis was placed on the presentation of the characteristics determining a specific application.
