OPTIMIZATION OF CADMIUM (II) RECOVERY IN SOLID PHASE EXTRACTION PROCESS WITH ION-IMPRINTED POLYMER AS THE SORBENT

Abstract

Cadmium is an extremely toxic metal. The ingestion of even small amounts of cadmium in drinking water causes kidney damage, pulmonary emphysema and dysfunction of other organs, including liver, intestine and spleen. Long-term exposure to low cadmium concentrations causes bone decalcification. Because of the high toxicity, environmental contamination by cadmium is monitored. Cadmium concentrations in environmental samples are determined by spectroscopic methods, which often require sample preconcentration prior to assay. This is typically achieved by solid-phase extraction. A prerequisite for successful solid-phase extraction is a sufficient selectivity of extraction adsorbents. Ion-imprinted polymers can provide adsorption selectivity and a satisfactory separation of the sample from interfering components. In this paper, the copolymer of 1-allyl-2-thiourea and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate imprinted towards cadmium (II) ions was used as a sorbent in the solid-phase extraction process. In an optimized extraction process, cadmium recovery from standard solutions and selectivity of extraction from environmental samples (mineral water and tap water) were investigated. The results demonstrated that aqueous solutions of HNO3 efficiently elute cadmium from tested matrix. Other effective eluents include 0.005M EDTA, pH 3, 0.005M EDTA, pH 4, 0.005M EDTA, pH 5, and NaOH, pH 8.
