CITRATE IONS – THEIR PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS, PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS, AND POTENTIAL ROLE IN BIOMATERIALS ENGINEERING

Mateusz Karasiewicz

Sylwester Krukowski

Abstract

The topics of this review are the physiological functions of citrate ions, their complex contribution to metabolic processes, as well as their localization within cells of the human body. Moreover, therapeutic applications of citrates are discussed, including those currently at the testing stage. A relatively new direction of research is the use of citrates in biomaterials engineering, an approach that leads to possible novel applications in medicine and pharmacy.
