Abstract

Among modern materials used in implantology and regenerative medicine, hydroxyapatite occupies a special place. Hydroxyapatite is employed as a bone substitute, as a coating for metallic implants, and as a component of bone-compatible composite biomaterials. Recently, attempts have been made to design hydroxyapatite-based multifunctional implants which, in addition to repairing bone loss, would release medication directly at the site of implantation. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current knowledge in the area of generation and use of modern hydroxyapatite-based systems for antibiotic delivery to bone.
