Abstract

The initial antihistamines were introduced over eight decades ago and encompass two generations of H1 receptor antagonists. The initial generation of antihistamines, which possess an additional sedative effect, was employed in the treatment of insomnia. One of the antihistamines utilized in the treatment of insomnia is diphenhydramine. Despite its proven efficacy when administered orally, the drug has numerous side effects and contraindications. The use of this medication has been demonstrated to significantly exacerbate the effects of other pharmaceutical agents and may potentially lead to the development of dependence. Another substance with significant structural similarity to diphenhydramine and employed in medicinal products for the treatment of insomnia is doxylamine. It belongs to the first generation of H1 antihistamines and is of significant interest. It exhibits sedative, hypnotic, antiemetic and antihyperalgesic properties. The objective of this paper is to discuss histamine receptors, the effects of histamine, antihistamines and to present safe methods for the prevention and treatment of sleep disorders.
