Abstract

The presence of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) in the environment is a serious global problem. Among the API contaminating the environment representatives of various therapeutical groups can be found, including: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics and other biocidal compounds, steroids, compounds for therapy of central nervous system or circulatory system. That is caused by inefficient decontamination of wastewater in the wastewater treatment plants. As a result, residues of API drift into the environment, what is toxic for various organisms (including human) and disrupts the ecosystem balance. This is the reason of researching for new wastewater decontamination methods. One of them is the application of non-taxonomical group of white-rot fungi able to degrade various chemical compounds, what is confirmed by numerous experiments.

This paper constitutes a review focusing on: the sources of API in the environment, presence of API in the municipal wastewater, their toxic effect on organisms, law regulations on the presence of API in the environment, abilities of white-rot fungi to degrade API.

Keywords:
