Cotoneaster horizontalis Decne. (Rosaceae) - medicinal or just ornamental species?

Abstract

The genus Cotoneaster Medikus (Rosaceae) includes many species traditionally used in Asian medicine to treat, among others, cardiovascular diseases, cuts and wounds, diabetes, hemorrhoids, abdominal pain, eye diseases and fever. A representative of this group of plants is Cotoneaster horizontalis Decne., whose health-promoting and healing effects have been confirmed in many scientific studies. To date, compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, cyanogenic glycosides, essential oils, fatty acids, triterpenes, sterols and vitamins have been identified or isolated in the leaves, fruits, flowers and twigs of C. horizontalis. Many of them are responsible for pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Despite numerous studies on the phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of extracts from individual parts of C. horizontalis, the available literature lacks a review paper summarizing the achievements of current reports on the effects and safety of use of this species. This work is a collection of information available in the scientific literature regarding the morphology, chemical composition, biological activity and cytotoxicity of extracts and compounds obtained from C. horizontalis. This work, by indicating further research perspectives, constitutes an important reference base for subsequent research on various medical applications of both extracts and pure isolates of C. horizontalis.
