DIAGNOSTIC VALUE OF HAIR ANALYSIS

Izabela Łuczak-Zielkiewicz

Mirosław M. Szutowski

Abstract

Hair analysis plays an increasingly significant role in toxicological and forensic sciences. Hair analysis is used in criminal investigations, in clinical medicine, testing of drivers for drugs and in workplace drug testing. In comparison with widely used analytic materials such as blood or urine, the persistence of substances in hair makes detection possible for many months after exposure. Retrospective analysis affords possibilities for establishing patient history, the course of previous medications, drug abuse, lack of compliance with alcohol or drug restrictions, and helps to establish the cause of poisonings. Rapid progress in relevant technologies has led to increasingly sophisticated analytical methods. The sensitivity of modern methods permits the determination of trace amounts (on the order of picograms) of xenobiotics and their metabolites in hair.
