RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY: A MODERN TECHNIQUE FOR MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS AND BIOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS

Paulina Nykiel

Abstract

Raman spectroscopy (RS) is widely applied to qualitative and quantitative analysis of solid, liquid and gaseous samples.  The main advantages of RS include a real-time analysis during medical examination or operation, precise results with low cost and minimal or no sample preparation. Moreover, the method is non-destructive. A Raman spectrum of a biological tissue can be treated as its “fingerprint”, which allows one to perform easy structural and chemical characterization and identification of such complex material. The present work is focused on prospects of RS in medical diagnosis and biochemical analysis. Those selected examples show high potential of RS.
