Abstract

Kidney diseases are an important challenge for nowadays medicine. Chronic kidney disease is classified as a “disease of affluence”, moreover the problem of kidney diseases is also increasing due to an aging of a population. Elderly people are a part of a population with high risk of kidney failure. Additionally, an occurrence of concomitant diseases, e.g. cardiovascular diseases, significantly hinders treatment and increases mortality in this group. Chronic kidney disease is progressive and finally leads to end-stage renal disease. In that case a life-saving method is renal replacement therapy – dialysis or kidney transplantation. Due to limited number of organs for transplantation, majority of patients with end-stage renal disease are treated with dialysis. Kidney transplantation is an optimal method of renal replacement therapy, because of the longest survival of patients, the best quality of life and because it is less expensive than dialysis. Monitoring of transplanted kidneys function aims to provide a long life of “new” organ. Early diagnosis of unsatisfactory graft function and rapid medical intervention is intended to prevent the loss of the transplanted organ. Monitoring of parameters such as eGFR, a concentration of immunosuppressive drugs or level of markers of cardiovascular diseases is an important part of treatment.
