POLYUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS AND THEIR OXIDATION PRODUCTS

Piotr Wałejko

Stanisław Witkowski

Abstract

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are indispensable for proper development and normal function of an organism. They are of particular significance in human nutrition. There are two major subgroups of PUFAs: ω–3 and ω–6. They play an important role in the treatment of atherosclerosis and other pathological states that are associated with disorders of lipid homeostasis. Certain PUFAs are precursors of biologically important compounds, such as prostaglandins, mono and dihydroxy fatty acids, iso– and neuroprostanes, as well as iso– and neurofurans. In recent years numerous reports concerning their potential role as biomarkers of pathological conditions have appeared.

Keywords:

polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), essential fatty acids (EFA), free radical lipids peroxidation, isoprostanes, neuroprostanes, isofurans, neurofurans
