SYNTHESIS AND STRUCTURAL STUDIES OF CALCIUM HYDROXYAPATITES MODIFIED WITH AMINO ACIDS

Sylwester Krukowski

Abstract

Modification of calcium hydroxyapatites with simple organic molecules, such as amino acids, is an important method to improve biocompatibility of those biomaterials. There are two types of amino acid – apatite interactions: adsorption and inclusion. Their occurrence is strongly dependent on the preparative procedure, thus, by appropriate selection of synthesis conditions one can adjust the distribution of amino acid molecules between the apatite surface and the apatite crystal lattice. Structural and analytical studies of the modified apatite materials can be performed using vibrational infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, as well as electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis.
