Abstract

Preparations from eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata), chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), common mallow (Malva sylvestris), witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), and bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) have been widely used in medicine, both conventional and folk, for centuries, including the treatment of eye diseases. The study aimed to review the literature on current research confirming the healing effects of plant substances described in historical sources as agents of ophthalmological importance. Therefore, the analysis of sources in the PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct databases was performed for the years 1993-2022. Attention was paid to the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and, in particular, antibacterial effects of selected plant materials. The article also describes the use of the above plants and their products in traditional herbal medicine.
