Can overweight or underweight in young healthy women in the pre-conception period predict disturbed homeostasis of thyroid hormones and protein composition in serum?

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of underweight, normal body weight and overweight in pre-conception period on thyroid hormones status and electrophoretic composition of serum proteins. During the study concentration profile of thyroid hormones (TSH, fT3, fT4) and proteins located in 6 electrophoretic fractions was assesed. Obtained results showed no significant differences in TSH levels, the most specific marker of primary thyroid diseases, between underweight women, normal weight and overweight. Possibility of using BMI measurement to assess altered thyroid function in study group was therefore excluded. On the other hand, thyroid hormones have a direct influence on regulation of metabolic homeostasis in both overweight and underweight women, by various mechanisms.
