ARGLABIN - SESQUITERPENE LACTONE REVEALING ANTITUMOR ACTIVITY

Abstract

This review highlights the present state of knowledge on the biogenesis of sesquiterpene lactones, in particular biological activities and mechanism of action of arglabin, one of the important metabolite of this group. Arglabin - [1(R),10(S)-epoxy-5(S),5(S),7(S)-guaia-3(4),11(13)-dien-6,12-nolid], represents sesquiterpene gamma-lactones of the guaianolides type. This compound occurs in a few species from Artemisia (Asteraceae) genus. It was originally isolated from the flowers heads and leaves of Artemisia glabella Kar. et Kir. Biological studies showed strong anti-inflammatory, but predominantly antitumor activity of arglabin.
