PULMONARY HYPERTENSION — PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND DRUGS USED IN THERAPY

Abstract

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a relatively rare disease with a severe course characterized by the presence of elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary circulation. Non-specific symptoms and the lack of a simple diagnostic method contribute to the late detection of the disease, which significantly worsens the prognosis and increases the cost and invasiveness of treatment. In this article a classification of PH due to its etiology is presented and the individual types of PH with regard to their pathophysiology are characterized. Moreover, PH diagnostics and drug types used in therapy (e.g. endothelin receptor antagonists, prostanoids, phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors) are described.
