NOVEL TRENDS IN ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUG DEVELOPMENT

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a severe, chronic mental illness that affects approximately 1% of the population. It is associated with a shortened lifespan and significant impairments in social and vocational functioning. Multiple domains of symptoms, e.g. positive and negative symptoms as well as cognitive deficits demand a complex approach to treatment. Results of recent large-scale studies comparing the effectiveness of typical versus atypical antipsychotics appear to indicate that second generation agents are neither more effective, nor associated with better cognitive or social outcomes. The rational development of intentionally designed multi-target agents may solve these therapeutic problems, resulting in the next generation of CNS drugs.
