WATER ENVIROMENT TOXICITY INVESTIGATED BY BIOASSAYS

Abstract

Physicochemical analysis is inadequate to provide information on unknown hazardous compounds in environment and their potential harmful effect on man and aquatic ecosystems. No instrument has been devised by man that can measure the toxicity. Only living organisms could show some response to hazardous chemical compounds. A bioassay - an aquatic toxicity test, is a procedure in which the responses of organisms are used to detect or measure the presence toxicants in environmental samples. The main goals of bioassays include: the assessment of the toxicity of pure compounds, their mixtures, effluents and waters; assessment of the influence of environmental factors on the toxicity of toxicants; assessment of the effectiveness of different waste treatment methods; identification of sources of toxicity; and raising the alarm over the pollution of drinking water sources.
Organisms differ in their susceptibility to various classes of chemical agents. Therefore to estimate the possible effect of xenobiotics on the environment a battery of tests is required. In the paper some bioassay techniques are presented with the examples of their use in ecotoxicological studies carried out in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the Medical University of Warsaw.
