SELECTED ASPECTS OF PARENTERAL NUTRITION

Abstract

Diseases of the gastrointestinal system may impede physiological food ingestion by the oral route. In such cases, parenteral nutrition can be used, i.e., the intravenous administration of nutrients. Currently, parenteral nutrition is becoming increasingly tailored to the needs of the individual patient. As an intervention directly affecting the metabolism of the patient, parenteral nutrition should be preceded by a thorough assessment of the patient’s status. Prior to initiation of therapy, issues should be examined that include the patient’s energy requirements, type and site of infusion, the kind of nutrients used, and the risk of possible complications. Although it remains the gold standard for patients with gastrointestinal tract insufficiency, parenteral nutrition is associated with multiple side effects and risks. Therefore, while resorting to parenteral nutrition, the emphasis should be on rapid restoration of normal gastrointestinal system function.
