Abstract

The polyether ionophores represent a large group of natural, biologically active substances produced by Streptomyces. The compounds are lipid-soluble and are able to transport cations across cell membranes. Monensin A, ionophore antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces cinnamonensis is widely used as a growth promoter in veterinaryMonensin and its derivatives showed anticoccidial, antimalarial and antimicrobial activity.
