Active compounds in plants of the genus Alchemilla with proven skin care and therapeutic properties in the treatment of skin diseases

Abstract

The genus Alchemilla (Rosaceae) includes many species traditionally used in Asian medicine and modern cosmetology in order to treat numerous skin dysfunctions such as acne, psoriatic, atopic dermatitis, wounds, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. These plants contain compounds with documented dermatological activities, e.g.: tannins, flavonoids (catechins, flavones, flavonols, flavanones, isoflavones), proanthocyanidins (condensed tannins), phenolic acids, aldehydes, alcohols, triterpenes and stilbenes, among others. Compounds present in Alchemilla species exhibit anti-acne, anti-aging, collagen production-enhancing, anti-inflammatory, antimelanogenic, antioxidant, photoprotective, emollient, hair growth-stimulating, moisturizing, immunomodulatory, anticancerogenic and epidermal regeneration activities. The present work, indicating further research perspectives, provides an important reference base for further studies on the various cosmetic applications of both extracts and pure isolates obtained from the Alchemilla genus.
