SCHIFF BASE COPPER (II) COMPLEXES - NOVEL COMPOUNDS WITH ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY

Elżbieta Hejchman

Abstract

Schiff bases are prepared via condensation of primary amines and aldehydes or ketones. The products are stable and exhibit antimicrobial, antiproliferative, as well as anti-inflammatory activity. Using them as ligands in the preparation of copper (II) complexes results in an increase of their biological activity. This paper reviews the latest literature reports concerning the antimicrobial activity of Schiff bases: derivatives of salicylaldehyde and 7-hydroxycoumarin, 8-substituted with a formyl or an acetyl group. We also describe the biological activity of their copper(II) complexes.
